ACCOUNTABILITY: Board of Directors

FUNCTION: Assume responsibility for the management of the HSEC facility, staff, public/customer service, veterinarian, and volunteers

Salary: $35,000

Duties & Responsibilities

The Director of Operations (DoO) will promote a positive public image for the organization, enhance the operation / effectiveness of the organization, improve the quality of life for the animals, and improve the services of HSEC. The DoO is responsible for conducting and / or overseeing staff in completing the duties as designated below:

Animal Welfare:

  • Chair HSEC’s Quality of Life Committee
  • Research, develop, and implement programs to benefit HSEC’s animals’ quality of life, including but not limited to foster, adoption follow-up, training, enrichment, and exercise programs
  • Work with Board Veterinarian to administer rabies vaccinations and to assess any medical concerns
  • Schedule with veterinarians all spay/neuter appointments
  • Assist staff in routine vaccination updates
  • Assist with maintaining animal database, including taking pictures and creating care cards.
  • Ensure vaccination intake is done in a timely and accurate manner
  • Carefully select and evaluate animals to take into the organization
  • Check animal rooms and cages for cleanliness, ensuring that state and federal standards are met

Operations:

  • Ensure appropriate systems and resources are in place to facilitate day-to-day facility operations and programs
  • Ensure appropriate equipment and supplies are available for effective facility operations and oversee inventory
  • Ensure all activities within the HSEC facility are conducted in a manner conducive to the safety and well-being of all employees, volunteers, visitors, customers and animals
  • Evaluate areas relevant to facility operations and programs, recommend revisions to the Board of Directors, and implement changes accordingly
  • With approval from the Board, develop, implement, and maintain strategies and systems to ensue all operational objectives are met
  • Work with the Board and staff to create and implement operational protocols and procedures, including but not limited to euthanasia, adoptions, behavior evaluations, animal health, etc.
  • Prepare, document, and deposit all monetary collection
  • Prepare monthly description of bills and forward to Treasurer in a timely manner
  • Oversee the animal database, ensuring that information is entered accurately in a timely manner, by the appropriate staff, and ensure that animal photos and cage cards are up to date
  • Oversee HSEC's volunteer program; ensure an adequate number of trained volunteer are available to meet HSEC's needs

Staff Management:

  • Select and cultivate qualified staff, model effective behaviors and skills, build morale
  • Hire, train, evaluate, supervise, manage, schedule, and direct the activities of all staff to support their growth and to maximize the potential of all employees for the good of HSEC
  • Lead the staff in managing and administering operational programs and services of the organization, assisting when necessary with job-related tasks

Community Relations / Fundraising:

  • Oversee facility tours, public educational programs, special events, and fundraising activities as needed in cooperation with the assistant shelter director
  • Work in cooperation with the Board to develop a fundraising plan
  • Serve as a positive representative of HSEC

Liaison for Staff / Facility Board:

  • Prepare monthly operational reports for the Board
  • Serve as the point person for the Board concerning all animal issues
  • Attend all monthly Board meetings
  • Attend all Facility Committee meetings as the HSEC staff representative
  • Attend all Finance Committee meetings as the HSEC staff representative
  • Respond with 24 hours by phone / email to President’s non-urgent HSEC business
  • Undergo performance review by Personnel Committee every six months
