Job Title

This position performs a variety of tasks in the Detention Center and Courtrooms and transport of inmates; may be assigned to Detention Center as inmate transport officer; serves as Bailiff.

Job Description

Assignments may include providing security for the courtroom including security for court officials, opening of court, physical inspections and security, and security for the public; transporting inmates securely from the detention center to court; transporting inmates and/or mental patients to other federal, state or local detention facilities, to medical appointments or other places. Work involves broad contacts with the public and court officials as well as considerable judgement and initiative and tact, courtesy, and firmness in dealing with inmates, courtroom officials, and the general public. The employee is subject to hazards in law enforcement work including working inside a detention environment, and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons and loud noises. Work in law enforcement is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and evaluated for adherence to regulations, laws, time schedules, and the safety and security of inmates and the general public.

Essential Functions

Provides security for court officials and the public; conducts inspections of courtrooms and related facilities; operates metal detectors; escorts judges and other court officials to court, on trips, to vehicles and other places as needed; provides security for magistrates as needed.

Escorts and/or transports inmates from local or other detention facilities to court; ensures security during transport and while in court.

Opens and closes court at designated times; inspects the courtroom for safety and security; insures that rooms are set up properly for use of judges and other staff; maintains security and decorum in the courtroom; maintains security for jury during trial and deliberations; provides communications to jurors with courtroom officials; insures juror needs are met.

Secures and transports inmates to and from court as needed; transports inmates to other locations as needed.

Escorts mental patients; maintains security at hospitals; transports to various mental institutions in the state.

Checks disposition of inmates for clarity and completeness; takes disposition to detention center; executes judgement orders; processes weekend inmates into and out of the detention facility.

Mails and tracks jury summons.

Communicate with other counties and prisons for transportation of inmates for court related purposes.

Enters court dates into database and checks against disposition orders.

Take DNA samples from convicted offenders that are on probation.

Taking custody of people with unserved warrants and taking newly committed prisoners from the courtroom to the detention center.

Escorts inmates to video arraignment and ensures inmates complete necessary forms.

Additional Functions

Performs related tasks as required.

Transport Federal and out of state inmates across state lines.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards related to transportation of inmates and courtroom procedures.

Working knowledge of detention policies and procedures covering inmate security, classification, care and discipline.

Working knowledge of the policies, procedures, organization, and function of the Sheriff's Department and other related county departments and courts.

Working knowledge and skill in using applicable information technology.

Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment.

Some knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures.

Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics.

Skill in collaborative conflict resolution.

Ability to act with sound judgement in routine and emergency situations.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

Ability to present effective court testimony.

Ability to prepare clear and concise activity reports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and other public officials.

Ability to exercise sound judgement in routine and emergency situations requiring security decisions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with and deal tactfully, firmly, and decisively with staff, prisoners, attorneys, court personnel, and the General public.

Transport inmates in a passenger vehicle and 15 passenger vans.

Typical Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

Graduation from High School or GED.

One (1) year of Law Enforcement experience.

Additional Requirements:

Must be at least 20 years of age and possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License.

Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
