SALARY RANGE: $43,810.00 - $60,502.00

The Office of the Clerk of Superior Court, New Hanover County, is seeking a qualified individual to serve in the position of Deputy Clerk in the legal system of North Carolina in the Estates / Special Proceedings Division. Employee will focus on assisting Estates families and Special Proceeding customers by phone or at the front counter.

Estate Clerks process decedent and guardianship estates according to North Carolina statutes. Primary responsibilities including processing applications for probate of wills and codicils, appointing personal representatives for decedent estates, guardianships, trustees, collectors, and allowances; preparing letters of testamentary, administration, and guardianship; administering oaths and setting bonds for administrators and guardians; reviewing annual and final accountings for accuracy; issuing Notices and Orders to personal representatives and legal counsel.

Estate Clerks require an ability to read and understand the statutes and procedures for estate administration and record keeping, an understanding of basic accounting, strong attention to detail, and the ability to make timely decisions with accuracy. Estate Clerks meet with attorneys, representatives of other agencies, and the public and must be able to tactfully and diplomatically explain rules, policies, and procedures.

New hires may be paid above the minimum rate depending on education and experience in a North Carolina Clerk of Superior Court office.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Knowledge of: NC general statutes; policies and procedures related to the local judicial district; civil proceedings and the Civil Case Processing System (VCAP); juvenile proceedings; Juvenile Case Tracking/Scheduling System (JWISE); eWarrants; eCourts; Odyssey Enterprise Justice, and general office and clerical procedures.

Skills in: basic math; active listening; managing a high volume of public interaction; effectively communicating both verbally and in writing; fast, accurate data entry; and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to: read and comprehend legal documents; interact diplomatically with a diverse group of people; multi-task; adjust to unexpected events; meet deadlines; organize and manage files; work independently; maintain confidentiality; and provide procedural information without giving legal advice.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 18 years of age. New Hanover County residents preferred.

Management Preference*A background in customer service, estates/special proceedings, banking, accounting or legal experience is preferred.*Three - five years' experience in estates in either a clerk's office or law office/trust office or a law license with a year of practical experience or extensive banking or accounting experience. Management prefers applicants with professional experience working in a courthouse or law office.
