Job Title: Animal Care Attendant - Part Time

Department: Animal Services
Pay Grade: 59
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the position is to provide care for the animals in the custody of Haywood County Animal Services. The work of the position includes but is not limited to maintaining the animal shelter; and assisting the public. The position works according to defined procedures; work is regularly reviewed by supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs janitorial duties in public areas as assigned.
  • Feeds animals on regular basis by washing food and water bowls; preparing food; and distributing to animals.
  • Maintains sanitary cage conditions by doing shelter laundry and cleaning and disinfecting cages and kennel areas.
  • Performs animal enrichment activities by walking, training, and spending time with shelter animals.
  • Assists with adoption process by observing animals; assessing temperaments, skills, and needs; and communicating assessments with shelter staff and public.
  • Greets and assists the public in adopting and retrieving animals.
  • Administers medication to animals as directed by County Veterinarian.
  • Answers telephones and performs other clerical duties as assigned; and
  • Performs other assigned duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Rabies Vaccinator preferred.
  • One (1) year of directly related experience or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
  • Must be at least twenty-one years of age to drive a County vehicle.
  • Valid state driver's license. Must have no more than three (3) points showing on current DMV records in order to operate county vehicles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of county ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning and disinfectant procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe food handling and preparation procedures.
  • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of computers and applicable software programs.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with changing goals and priorities.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with other employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires heavy work that involves walking, standing, or crouching virtually all of the time and also involves exerting up to one hundred (100) pounds of force occasionally, or fifty (50) pounds of force frequently, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, depth and texture perception, and color perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Essential functions are performed with exposure to adverse conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures or inclement weather. Essential functions are also performed with exposure to animals that may be sick, injured, aggressive, rabid, or otherwise dangerous to self and others.
