General Statement or Primary Purpose

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance, remodeling, and repair of County buildings, grounds and facilities. Work involves performing work in carpentry, painting, roofing, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and electrical work. Work also involves various tasks associated with vehicle maintenance, general maintenance and housekeeping. Employee is on call 24 hours per day. Reports to the Buildings & Grounds Superintendent.
Duties and Responsibilities or Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Performs skilled carpentry and renovation work in the construction, repair or alteration of walls, roofs, doors and cabinets; builds or repairs partitions, cabinets, tables, shelves, and bookcases.
Strips, sands, paints and/or stains walls, trim, woodwork, cabinets, tables, signs, and other wooden articles.
Hangs and finishes sheetrock, paneling, wallpaper, tile and moldings; repairs sheet rock; installs and repairs carpeting; installs glass panes; installs suspended ceiling grids and tiles.
Performs maintenance and repair work on large maintenance equipment in the Department, including tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, front-end loader, etc.
Assists with the installation and maintenance of electrical systems in County buildings and facilities; routes and pulls wiring for electrical, telephone, computer, etc.; replaces faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, etc.
Performs minor plumbing tasks including changing faucet washers, stems, seals, etc.; assists in clearing drainage lines, installing water and sanitary fixtures and equipment, and repairing toilets by changing tank bulbs, overflow tubes, guide wires, etc.
Performs general maintenance and housekeeping duties as needed, including welding, pulling cables, moving furniture, dumping refuse, cleaning offices and floors, replacing light bulbs, etc.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Orders supplies and materials as necessary, negotiating the best price for the County.
Operates pickup or dump trucks to transport materials to and from job sites or to the landfill, or to deliver supplies to County offices.
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and 3 years of experience in construction or building maintenance trades work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
