Organizational Unit Overview

Academic Library Services (ALS) is a branch of Academic Affairs and reports through the Provost/ Vice?Chancellor for Academic Affairs. ALS serves East Carolina University faculty, students, staff and visitors by offering library research and services to support the research, instruction and service goals of the University.

Job Duties

The University History & Records department of Joyner Library is recruiting for a position to perform specialized duties in archives management. Duties include analyzing, arranging, describing, summarizing and coding the intellectual content of information resources in all formats. The position provides reference service, often involving complex questions, for campus administrative units and staff; staffs the research desk approximately five hours per week and on a rotational basis supervises the search room on weekends. This position will work with collections, both paper and electronic, including planning and managing projects, providing access, and preservation. This position also extends the reach of Archives by curating exhibits showcasing collection materials and conducts outreach to campus units about available Records Management services and training opportunities.

  • 30% Collection Management: Accessions, appraises, arranges, and describes materials in any format transferred to archival custody. Creates accession records, produces finding aids using EAD and ArchivesSpace, ensures proper storage, and contributes to policy decisions.
  • 20% University Archives Outreach: Curate exhibits within Joyner Library; coordinate blog posts and other outreach efforts.
  • 20% Client/Patron Service: Provides reference services, directs clients, serves on the Special Collections research desks, assists users with requesting materials, interprets copyright law.
  • 15% Records Management Outreach: Assists with outreach to campus offices and departments about offered services and training opportunities.
  • 10% Technical and Professional Development Responsibilities: Maintains knowledge of fair use, IP rights, copyright law, and stays current on archival methods and practices.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned: May include supervision of interns.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelors degree and one year of experience in a library, archives, or records management; or high school diploma or equivalency and five years of experience; or equivalent combination of training. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • General knowledge of archival best practices.
  • Ability to apply FERPA, HIPAA and university policies.
  • Analytical skills and ability to interpret oral and written information.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Research skills; knowledge of Microsoft applications, content management systems, database applications, EAD, and DACS.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina history and primary source research.
