Custodian/Bus Driver
Reports To: School Principal / Head Custodian
Term of Employment: TBD
Supervises: No one
Performance Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated annually by the principal, head custodian, and the bus supervisor
Education/Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED. Must be eligible for school bus driver's license (CDL).
Position Summary:
The Custodian/Bus Driver plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors by performing routine custodial and groundskeeping duties, as well as transporting students safely to and from school and school-sponsored activities. This dual-role position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Custodial Responsibilities:
* Clean and sanitize floors, walls, ceilings, restrooms, and other school facilities.
* Dust and polish furniture; wash windows.
* Strip, buff, wax, and polish floors as needed.
* Collect and dispose of garbage and recyclables properly.
* Set up and move furniture and equipment for school events and daily operations.
* Assist students, staff, and visitors as directed by the supervisor.
* Maintain school grounds: mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and trees, raking, collecting litter, and performing minor landscaping repairs.
* Conduct snow removal and ice treatment duties as assigned.
* Perform general handyman-level maintenance: minor plumbing, painting, furniture repair, lightbulb replacement, and cleaning of gutters and drainpipes.
* Operate and monitor heating, ventilation, and electrical systems; conduct minor preventative maintenance and lubrication services.
* Assist with inventory control and maintain custodial supply orders.
* Participate in key maintenance and security procedures, including operation of fire and alarm systems.
* Monitor property for safety, vandalism, and trespassing; notify authorities as needed.
* Transport instructional materials, supplies, and equipment as requested.
Bus Driver Responsibilities:
* Safely operate a school bus in accordance with North Carolina laws and Pitt County Schools' policies.
* Follow assigned routes and adhere to pick-up and drop-off schedules.
* Maintain order and ensure the safety of students while on the bus.
* Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any issues.
* Maintain a clean and operational bus interior and exterior.
* Support school staff and parents by establishing positive and professional communication.
* Remain calm and exercise good judgment in emergency or unexpected situations.?
* Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a School Bus "S" endorsement.
Qualifications:
Education & Licensing Requirements:
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a School Bus "S" endorsement.
* Must meet all legal and physical requirements as set forth by the NC DMV and the School Bus & Traffic Safety Section, including passing a medical examination and Physical Performance Evaluation.
Skills and Abilities:
* Ability to operate custodial and groundskeeping equipment.
* Basic handyman and facility maintenance skills.
* Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds regularly and occasionally more.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and the public.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle sensitive situations appropriately.
Physical Demands:
* Frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
* Ability to climb ladders and balance when necessary.
* Must have visual ability including depth perception and ability to distinguish colors.
* Must meet physical standards to safely operate a school bus and perform custodial tasks.
