Description of Work

Work in this class involves assisting in planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a minimum custody facility. Employees supervise Correctional Sergeant I's and may serve as the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) in the absence of the Correctional Captain. Responsibilities include planning and supervising personnel actions, administrative affairs, officers' work schedules, and coordinating activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the inmate population. This role is primarily custodial, serving as shift supervisor. Positions report to a Correctional Captain I or an Assistant Correctional Superintendent.

Position Details

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected, a new salary will be recalculated based on relevant education, experience, funding, and internal equity, which may result in a pay increase.

Effective January 1, 2025: The new salary range will be $37,782 - $66,120. Prior applicants remain under consideration and do not need to reapply.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies, Procedures, and/or Facility Operations.
  • Experience with report writing.

Management Preference: Candidates with at least 2 years as a Correctional Sergeant are preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
